Police say three protesters at the NATO summit in Chicago have been charged with terrorism conspiracy stemming from allegations that they planned to make Molotov cocktails.

...the three were being held on charges of conspiracy to commit terrorism, possession of an explosive or incendiary device and providing material support.
Their attorney, Sarah Gelsomino, tells AP the men are "absolutely in shock and have no idea where these charges are coming from."
This sounds very suspicious to me. The protest hasn't even started yet, and already people are being arrested.
"...the three were being held on charges of conspiracy to commit terrorism, possession of an explosive or incendiary device and providing material support." -Anyone who owns a car that is run on petrol or gasoline, a few glass jars or bottles and a few old pieces of rag or cloth can be charged with "possession of an explosive or incendiary device and providing material support." It is not clear in the article that these guys had the Molotov cocktails already made, or they just had the materials (petrol, glass bottles and rags) laying around their homes. Judging by what their lawyer says about their reactions, I think that it is safe to assume that they just had the materials laying around their homes and hadn't actually made the Molotov cocktails.
It's a frightening thought because those are materials that many people have laying around their homes, it doesn't mean that they plan on making Molotov cocktails.
What is even more frightening is that the Department Of Defense teaches its personnel that free expression in the form of public protests should be regarded as "low level terrorism." So apparently legal protesters are "low level terrorists" now.
